You’ve heard me laugh my ass off with the current batch of worms distributed within zip files, as it requieres four clicks to be infected. But now, the Bagle.J worm goes even further. It has a password protected zip file, which flies past the mail server/gateway anti-virus scanners (by default, any virusscanner will ignore password protected zip files, most because it doesn’t even know the password). As it’s already spreading at a fast pace, I can conclude that stupidty is unlimited. Next up…I’m gonna write a virus/worm that will get you infected if you follow the following instructions: Jump up and down 7 times, then do a breakdance while drinking a hot cup of tea. If only everybody had a webcam connected and stream ready, I could really have a good time.

Spidey slings along a bit longer

Spiderman 3 is a fact (I can hear you saying, “I haven’t seen Spidey 2 yet”). But not only Marvel and Sony have faith in themselves, also a whole bunch of financial analysts say the next two movies will be highly profitable.
Interesting fact though, Marvel and Sony still haven’t resolved the ongoing lawsuits between them (mostly about money going into the wrong pocket).
So, will you go see Spidey 2 ? And will you go see Spidey 3 ? (Just helping the financial analysts a bit with more data)

Review: Five for Fighting – The Battle for Everything

March 2nd, 2004

With only one super hit two years ago (Superman, in 2002. And it wasn’t even a hit here, just in the States), we haven’t really gotten a chance to know them that well. Well, here was the chance, as it recently entered the charts in the lower regions. As it turns out, it kinda deserves that place. The usually soft rocky songs on this album, are just too weird to put it in words. In more than half of the songs, I was thinking aloud “What THE HELL is this ?”. With just a twinge of jazziness attached to most of the songs, my mind is made up more easily. This album can be found filed away under the catagory “DELETED”.3+.

Just like the .dot com bubble burst, so is the blogger scene fading. Or so this CNN article says. Guess my kind (blog entries every day-ish) is dying out (as the survey says, it’s 2%, and then %10, which leaves only 0.02%).
But trust me on this one. Search engines would better use the rss feed when available (or some other kind of blog specific routine), it’s still the blogs out there that interrupt the usefulness of their engine.

US Box Office

March 1st, 2004
movie logo

It’s all controversy at the box office top this week. From an independent movie, a self financed Mel Gibson pic (he pulled some $25 million out from his own pocket), to a much critised screener, to a smashing box office. The Passion of Christ, supposedly to start off as a small limited release, pre-sales and feedback indicated more and more copies were necessary to be shipped. It grew to a massive 3000+ release, equal that of a Matrix or Spiderman release. Have faith, someone must have told Mel. An angel was sent to the box office to collect no less then $76.3 million for the weekend. Un unusual opening at Monday means the total is currently at $117.5 million.
More down to earth was 3rd week’s 50 First Dates at number 2, with $12.6 million. Number 3 was the premiere of the thriller Twisted, with $9.1 million. Second week for Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, it takes in another lousy $6.1 million, good for a number 4 spot. And last, a sorry excuse for a sequel was Dirty Dancing Havana Nights at number 5, with $5.9 million.

Read this article first.
Now, as you’ve been able to vote for my desk at work for 4 years now (my desk at home even 5 years), all I ask for is one shot back. How do you rate your office or desk at work ? Is it satisfactory ? Is it a mess ? Safety hazard ? Won’t let your mommy see it ?

Review: Melissa Etheridge – Lucky

February 29th, 2004
music logo

This album can be roughly divided into 3 catagories. The first is the heavy on the guitar kind, high on shouting, low on impact. Obviously, these are the first to be removed from my playlist. Then there’s the upbeat, easy listening, happy sing-a-long kind of songs. Good enough for a resident stay on my playlist. And then, the most important one, the last catagory. The kind with deep lyrics, they’re very emotional, and sometimes even chilling to the bone (for instance Tuesday Morning). As mentioned earlier, these songs combine the best with her rough and deep yet silky voice. While the first single Breathe is the best song on this album, every single one of the last catagory are easily picked out and graded as good to very good. And also, luckily, it’s this last catagory that wins in numbers. These all deserve an instant spot on my vast array of portable music players. Combined with the second catagory, it’s not a perfect album, but probably one of the best this year.8+.

So, I’m checking my bank account. See what’s been added and deducted (usually tiny bit added and a lot deducted). Then my eye falls on a strange addition. 2,50 euros from a Desk Services B.V. with the description “croky refund”. Well, people who know me, know I prefer one brand. People who know my very well, even know which taste I’d kill a random family member for. Also, I don’t remember writing any complaint letters to anyone lately.
So, how come ? I really want to know, not so much that I can set this thing straight, but more so on how to exploit this. Free money is always good, y’know.

Review: Big Fish

The line between fantasy and reality is harsh. Mixing it together, can be that much harder. And that’s exactly what Tim Burton is trying. The exaggerated stories serve well as light entertainment. With no real content, it’s still interesting enough to run its course towards the end. The reality part is only touching in the lightest sense. As the character dynamics demand great distance, it’s hard to feel close to them. And the mix ? Well, as I said, it’s hard. Chosing the middle road, it ends up being quite predictable. With the disrespect that Tim Burton has built up in me now, this movie tips the balance back a bit, though it is only a small amount. And even then, most of it is deserved by the actors.7-.

As I stepped in the car, I heard it on the radio. As we drove off, I saw it all around me. As we took the highway to work, an evil grin appears on my face. Traffic jam.Totalling to some 800 kilometres, second highest record of all times, in this little country. Going 120 km/h on the A16. It’s all clear. Almost a speed record to my work. Yeah, traffic jam can sometimes be fun.

This week, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King become the second movie to break the $1 billion mark for the worldwide box office. First is still James Cameron’s Titanic with $1.8 billion. Totals for the three combined is currently at $2.8 billion. The last part of the trilogy, of course, doesn’t have enough steam left to take over the first spot. If only Elijah Wood screamed “I’m the KING OF THE WORLD !!!” on the top of mount Doom, maybe, then maaaybe, it had a chance.

Fun with your logs

February 23rd, 2004

Another week, another round. Let’s dig into my log files and see what funny things come up:

“Melissa Etheridge”, “Breathe”, “download” on Google.com – rank 119, talk about overstating a search phrase. 2 comma’s and 4 quotes too many.
anouk download code lion on Google.nl – rank 6, hey I didn’t even know they were having this special offer. Probably means I ate those five for nothing !
is the handler tv show cancelled on Yahoo Search – rank 19
Handler tv show ending? on Yahoo Search – rank 12, this hit was from the same IP number as the previous hit. Talk about spoilers !
eighties season cancelled police tv shows on Google.ca – rank 5
google.ca “free antivirus” on MSN Search – rank 8, 9 AND 10 ! Why in heaven’s name would you put a search engine as a keyword in another search engine ?
spiderman 2 subtitle on Google.pl – rank 57, Poland must be very advanced, as I didn’t know Spiderman 2 was finished already.
haircut paris hilton on Google.ca – rank 8, did you know of all things, the haircut is the least I’m interested in when the name Paris Hilton comes to mind ? Unless they mean some other kind of haircut…
Download Paris Color Sex Video on Google.com – rank 40, probably worried he might waste bandwith on a black and white sex video.

50 First Dates finished first again, while dropping to $21 million, 47% down last week. The total (some $72 million) is still inspiring for any romantic comedy though. Second is the premiere of Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, a Disney movie for the teenage girls, with only $9.2 million. Third is Miracle with $8 million. Fourth is another lacklustre premiere, Welcome to Mooseport with Gene Hackman and Ray Romano, with $7 million. Another premiere at number 5, Eurotrip, took in a measly $6.6 million. Even worse, at 8, is Meg Ryan starrer boxing biopic Against the Ropes with $3 million. Definitely a slow week.
