Somehow, there exists this strange notion that I’m a messy person. But judging by the average, well above 2.5, people seem to ignore that number. Hence this special monday before and after session.

Although a certain spider was faster, Shrek isn’t a slow one at that. In 10 days the sequel raced past the $200 million mark. Still at number one with $73.1 for this week.
The current biggest worldwide opener, comes in second. The Day After Tomorrow scares some $70 million positive cashflow.
Third spot is for Troy, another big drop, to just $11.5 million in its third week.

Review: The Day After Tomorrow

Sunday, May 30th, 2004

With any world endangering disaster movie, it’s easy to make a comparison to either Deep Impact or Armageddon. This one would be somewhere inbetween. There is no story to speak of. But somehow, after seeing this movie, it’s actually not that necessary. The events follow up each other at such speed, smalltalk is the only dialogue possible. The rest is filled with extraordinary special effects, displayed with subtle techniques where you do get the feeling this is the biggest disaster movie ever made. To fill the other gaps, acting is very acceptable, and other cinematic tricks are well-oiled together to make a storyless movie as enjoyable as possible.7.

Hot Chick Alert

Take a look here. Yup, that’s Emmy Rossum, currently starring inThe Day after Tomorrow. Having only smaller movies till now, she kept a pretty low profile till now. Just one notch down the ladder from the likes of Jeniffer Love Hewitt and Jessica Alba (both talent and looks), she’s a hot chick nonetheless. Only one project is upcoming (Phantom of the Opera), maybe she likes the low profile.

Time for a simple one:

1. Which of the following DVD’s do I own, but haven’t watched it yet (as in unpacked, (or at least, not by me), and still not put in the DVD player):
a. Star Trek TNG series box
b. Training Day
c. Harry Potter 2: The Secret Chamber

2. Which of the following invention has been seriously on my mind:
a. Multi floss device (almost as big as your mouth, has enough extensions to fit all the gaps between your teeth, flosses it at once in less than 30 seconds (electronically, as opposed to the current manual labor that takes at least five minutes)
b. An electronic device that continuously monitors the internet connection (be it through software on the pc, or built-in the device itself), and when it concludes after a range of conclusive test that the internet is dead, it shuts the power down of the ADSL modem, and after 20 seconds, turns it back on. (As you know, it still happens sometimes, and it’s not just ADSL modem, wireless routers/access points also suffer this fate from now and then)
c. A solar outfit. As I carry several electronic devices with me, wouldn’t it be nice to have a continuous source of power (which we get from the sun) to keep all your devices going without carrying all those ac/dc power supplies ?

3. Pringles:
a. is an emotional subsitute
b. makes me aggressive
c. has been officially made into an essential food group.
d. is the only all-in-one food (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Things that can go wrong…

Friday, May 28th, 2004

So, today I ran outside, to catch my ride to work. Halfway through, the shocking thought reached me that I didn’t put gel in my hair. My hairdo isn’t that overly complex, but somehow it felt wrong.
Then halfway through the day I feel this headache coming up. Must be those late night Unreal Tournament sessions. Usually it means one or even two hours less sleep, which I don’t catch up on until the weekend. So, half functioning limping through the other half of the day, I finally got home after 18.00, for my well-deserved nap.
Around 21.30 it’s time to get up. Still a heavy head, but I couldn’t keep on sleeping. With a bad case of migraine I do sleep till morning, but this was a case of tiredness.
Then comes dinner. But it was the day I was supposed to get some groceries. So diner consisted of an orange, 2 Snickers ice cream bars, and a cup of Malaga ice cream.
So, the moral of the story ? No matter how strong you are, no matter how many asses you kick in UT, it always catches up with you (and in the worst case, as you have noticed, it takes half a day from your life). Ah well, almost weekend.

Free

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

It’s free, and if your time is free too, you might wanna try this link.
It’s the MSN’s game Outsmart, basically a bunch of celebrity quizes where you actually play against the celebrity. MSN gets more traffic, hence be able to sell more ads. You get a bit of trivia. The celebrity get to plug his/her new cd or movie. And hey, it’s pretty fun. It almost seems unscripted {:)

Oh yeah, one more thing. The second American Express/Seinfeld/Superman webisode is finally online.

Check this picture. Yeah, you probably already recognise her. It’s Zang Ziyi. First she stole my heart with Oscar winning Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in 2000. She took it overseas a year later with Rush Hour 2. You might think that was all, but Hero (not fully distributed throughout the world yet) was the second Oscar nominated movie of hers.
But as a sign she’s ready to take on the world, she has TWO movies running in Cannes. 2046, a sci-fi/drama and (current title, might be changed) House of Flying Daggers, another love story/martial arts. She definitely knows how to make the right choices.

More pictures over here. Yeah, smitten is an understatement. I should brush up on my Mandarin.

Green ogres must look cuter the older they get, because Shrek 2 open with monstrous numbers. $104.3 million, with some other record breaking numbers as well. Second was Troy, with $23.8 million, only slightly better than Van Helsing in the same time frame.
Van Helsing clings on number 3 with another $10.1 million. Mean Girls still means business in its fourth week with $6.9 million on number 4. Man on Fire isn’t extinguished either, on number 5 with $3.5 million.

Review: The Calling – Two

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Back in early 2001, when they were still unknown, all it took was a few seconds to get my attention (Wherever Will You Go was attached to the Enterprise series announcement trailers, a publicity stunt that worked out for both parties). Catchy as that was, it was never recaptured with their mildly entertaining following singles. The album was just about the same.
After 3 years, their sophomore album is out, and called Two. Not only signifying it’s the second album, but also to make clear they were a duo to start with (a pushing record company and some clever PR management will definitely make you believe otherwise).
With 11 songs, again, their first single Our Lives, seems the most catchy. The rest seems to build on the same template as their previous songs. Luckily, they’re upbeat enough to leave a twitching finger off the “next” button. Lyric wise, it’s still the same heartbreaking love songs that always go well with me. Singer Alex Band isn’t a vocal wonder, but he is making progress, and it’s mixed well together with the guitars, which consists of mostly mellow riffs. Not too special, but not too bad either.6½.

Review: Troy

Saturday, May 22nd, 2004

A tragedy of epic proportion, literally and illiterally. No doubt the $180 million was well spent, and luckily, they didn’t forget to pay the screenwriters as well. Wolfgang Petersen manages to show us the things that matter. The taglines (For honor – For victory – For love – For destiny – For passion – For Troy) were not made up (unlike most movies). It’s all there, blending together into a massive movie. The first strike very early in the movie will drop your jaw, and it grips you all the way to the end. The bloodiness is definitely there, but so are the subtleties, the dialogue that gives insight to the two hero characters. Bar the slight obviousness of typecasting, the acting is intense, helping you immerse into the story much quicker.
However entertaining, in the end, be it Homer’s insight so long ago (The Iliad was written somewhere 8 or 9 hundred years B.C.), or Wolfgang’s effort to show it to the world again, the message is clear: in war there are only losers.8.

As you may or may not now, my new digital camera has a resolution that’s almost triple the old one. Who am I then to withhold all the extra pixels from you ? So here are 2 desk pics at full res, perfect for your desktop wallpaper. Resize at your own discretion (or if you don’t want to, Windows can do it automatically when clicking the Stretch option in the same menu where you choose your wallpaper).

Another suggestion is to keep it shorter. And that’s not all, I made it easier as well, at least a few are fully googlable. Well, here goes:

2. What is my average daily Pringles consumption (measurement = 1 can) ?
a. 0.5 to 1
b. 0.25 to 0.5
c. 1 to 2
d. 2 to 3

3. Which TV series did I not watch regularly ?
a. The Powers of Matthew Star
b. Dr. Katz
c. Profiler
d. Cheers

4. Which Star Wars DVD do I not own ? (you may use more letters)
a. Star Wars: Episode I
b. Star Wars: Episode II
c. Star Wars: Episode III
