In an extra long holiday weekend, and therefore mostly family pics scored high, Eddy is on top again, with Disney’s The Haunted Mansion, good for $35 million. Second week for Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat, and another $34.1 million. But still, this holiday’s winner is Elf, bringing in another $31.8 million for a $130.1 cume since its release.

More or less…

The design is back to the style it was before…more or less. Let me know if it still looks like shit. That way, I know my reluctance to change anything has a more profound reason.

Surprise surprise

Friday, November 28th, 2003

As a Thanksgiving gift thingy, and also as a morale booster, mr. President Bush paid a surprise visit to Iraq, and had dinner with some 600 stunned troops. Kept secret until he was actually safe and sound in Bagdad was the prime directive. Had it been leaked out, he would’ve cancelled the trip, which nobody would’ve expected in the first place.
Anywayz, if he stays longer (and paint a bullseye on his forehead), maybe he can lure Saddam Hussein out of hiding. Heck, maybe even the whole Al-Queda network will come out of their holes. Now, THAT would be a marvelous plan.

Review: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Friday, November 28th, 2003

Well, a bit too far for my taste. The story is non-existent. The dialogue that fills the gaps between the action sequences is a bold effort to deepen the story, but fails miserably by being too superficial and often about the same subjects. The erratically directed action scenes and the casual acting is definitely not Oscar worthy. It’s more like a tub filled with not-interesting characters floating around aimlessly. With no drive behind this movie, it slowly halts to a speed of barely one knot. Probably only suits people who really dig being shouted at with nautical terms.6-.

Review: Kill Bill Volume 1

Thursday, November 27th, 2003

If too weird for words ever got meaning, it might be this movie. Over the top cinematics combined with exaggerated story elements with a touch of Japanese influence, and Mr. Tarantino has another unique movie(s: plural, if you include the next one) under his belt. While the story itself is rather bland, somehow it is able to pull off diminished eye flicker trick for the whole run. Camera movement, choice and timing of music and colors, they all add up to a unique style. Volume 2 should be able as surprising as this one, as each chapter from Volume 1 was a surprise itself.7½.

Just updated the blogging software, so, had to backup a bit, reconfigure a few and that leaves me with a very plain uncolored weblog for tha moment. It’s 3 AM, so bear with me for a few days.

Somehow, the sweeps do bring out the best of a show. All three episodes were stronger and more intense than usual. All three shows were almost tired, and showing story recycling, but for now, they’re saved.

Kiddie movie, Dr. Seuss’ the Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers, opens with $40 million, an average for a family laffer of this magnitude, considering the holiday season.
Second place was for horror pic Gothika (opens here 25 Mar), starring Halle Berry and Robert Downey Jr, with $19.6 million. Third week, third place was the other holiday hit Elf with another satisfying $19.1 million. In its second week, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World takes in a modest $15.2 million, probably barely enough wind in its sail to break the $100 million mark. Love Actually adds a few more theaters to make $9.1 million for an admirably fifth place.

Review: Enterprise 307 – 310

Saturday, November 22nd, 2003

With a pattern going on (one independent story followed by an episode to continue the arch), it’s still below mediocre. With only the last episode “Similitude” worth remembering and its slightly improved writing as a whole, it’s still a lacking season.

Review: Pink – Try This

Saturday, November 22nd, 2003

People who like her previous materials should watch out with this one. While Missundaztood was a mixed bag, this one is a bag better left alone. The few gems on the previous album were easily picked, but on this one, you won’t find any at all. Going the directions she’s taken already with the Charlie’s Angels 2 soundtrack, and like the first single from this album, the album is filled with even harder kinda rock. No subtlety is to be found, and even if the lyrics might be good, you’d be put off before you ever get to really hear it. It’s like those new dull “dance” songs from Madonna and Kylie Minogue, but then in the rock area. A twitch on the forward button…

Wacko ?

It’s that time again. Time to speculate. Did he, or did he not ? 3 million dollars further down the road, and finally in January it will appear in court. Till then, the Michael Jackson specials will grow like mushrooms on the TV again. Note that the last run of specials were during the February sweeps, and with these new allegations conveniently in the November sweeps, one can only wonder. If there’s smoke, there must be a fire ? A magnificent trick of some kids’ parents ? Maybe it’s Sony holding a grudge (His “new” Number Ones album was after all, released only last week) ? Some other conspiracy ? What do you think ?

Not a wrinkle on his face (well, he had one facelift though) and only 75 years old. Congratz to Mickey Mouse (and thereby, also Minnie Mouse, as she’s the same age, appearing in the same movie). Over 140 movies, and still no performance issues (if you see how hard Marlon Brando has to try to act a bit, you finally understand). Next year will mark his jump to 3D, so many many more year to you Mickey !

Review: Love Actually

Wednesday, November 19th, 2003

It’s hard to imagine a movie filled with 20+ class British actors fighting for screentime AND make a good movie. However, they did pull it off nicely. The story is like the branches of a tree, and that works well in the background. Sometimes mushy, sometimes awkward, but in the end a very entertaining feel-good movie.8-.
