Review: The Dead Zone

Just finished watching the (2nd) season finale, and I can tell ya, it keeps getting better and better. There’s a back-story that deepens throughout the season, the stories are still sharp and there’s no sense of slowing down or repeating old stories yet. Always a new twist, with fresh points of view, the future still looks bright for this show. Can’t wait for season 3 (not announced yet by the USA Network though).

Biggest baddest worm …

August 22nd, 2003
k logo

Well, all the headlines are clear on one thing. The new Sobig.F worm/virus is the biggest baddest fast spreading one up until now.
The conclusion of every article however, is quite wrong. They keep saying how the code has been perfected since the Sobig.E variant. The true reason for the record spreading wave is that, while global warming increases the temperature, somehow the global average IQ is very much going down !
From France to Tokyo, it doesn’t matter what the native language is, the fall for the “re: Application” subject lines, or even the English slanged “Wicked screensaver!” fires a curiosity neuron in the brain. A mindless click on the attachment is inevitable.
My educated guess is that the global average IQ is down 20 points since Sobig.E. How much do you think ?

Review: The Quiet American

August 21st, 2003
movie logo

A name like Michael Caine should be able to carry a movie. Well, he does. In spite of this somewhat mellow novel adaptation, and a trailer that showed all the action there was, it was still acceptable as a movie. Clearly broken apart in pieces with a different focus and feeling, it does feel a bit disjointed, not helping to pull you emotionally into this movie. The get-to-know-the-characters part, the subdued love story, the action sequences, the thriller twist, all feel like seperate parts, and there’s no effort made to mix it, or deepen it.6½.

Hit Predict…

August 20th, 2003
music logo

Nickelback has a new single out, Someday. And it’s as generic a guitar riff can get, with the usual untalented yelling. Nothing really new, yet it will still be a mild hit. Why ? The female part of the population will dig his new hairdo !
What do you think it’ll be?

US Box Office

Another sequel heads for the top spot, as Freddy battles Jason in back-up generatored movie theatres (opens here 2nd Oct). Taking in $36.4 million is quite a surprise, as horror flicks, especially part 3 or higher, are already considered B-movies. Dropping half its previous public is S.W.A.T on number 2, taking in $18.6 million in its second week. Seemingly low profile western, Open Range, starring/directed by Kevin Costner still manages to earn $14.1 million, finishing the top 3 (opens here unknown).

Scared ?

Well, the dang MSBlaster worm wuz a stupid worm for sure. It attacked www.windowsupdate.com, which wasn’t ever used anywayz (it has always been (v4.)windowsupdate.microsoft.com). It did lead to a few strange jumps for microsoft though. Jumping from platform and hosting firm a few times the past few days. From the *.microsoft.com site went from Windows 2003 Server to Linux (strangely, still operating IIS6) hosted by long time ally Akamai Technologies. The last jump is only a few hours later, to the fiber rich above.net, also a Linux favorer.
A quick look shows they’re having a pool of at least 16 IP addresses, with probably even more bandwidth and machines hanging behind each IP, which means next worm must work a lot faster and smarter if it wants to make even a small dent {:)

Hot Chick Alert

Not noticable in Star Wars: Episode I, she definitely made a statement with one of this years biggest hit, Pirates of the Caribbean. Of course, such a big movie can’t go unnoticed, and she already has 3 more (probably bigger) movies lined up. Who am I taling about ? Well, here’s Keira Knightley. Check out much more about her on this site. She looks also luvly in Bend it Like Beckham.

Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

August 15th, 2003
movie logo

Long title, long movie. And it’s not all that bad, thinking this genre never really attracted me (or anyone else, for that matter, as the pirate movies of the last decade have sunken faster than ghost ships disappear). In the capable hands of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has a golden touch, and under direction of George Verbinski (slow actioner The Mexican, and the scary The Ring), all is well. Tiny but tricky story, sails along with enough knots on the meter to make you dizzy. The love story however, was shoved under the carpet a bit. Atmosphere was flawlessly created with amazing sets and old fashioned explosive action scenes. Acting is particularly good with Johnny Depp taking the spotlight as a whacky pirate.7½.

Big bill for Bill….

August 13th, 2003
k logo

Microsoft has been ordered to pay up a whopping 520 million dollars to a small Chicago company and the university of California. This is for the copyright infringement of the plug-ins function of Explorer. For every shipped copy of Windows between 1997 and 2001, M$ has to pay a measly $1.47.
If ALL pirated copies of Windows had to be paid, M$ would have lost a FEW BILLIONS !!! Makes you feel not so guilty using your illegal copy of Windows eh ?
