Review: Identity

While this movie has its ups and downs, overall, it’s a good written story with nice ideas. Unlike most slasher movies, this one has a real drive behind it, with much more real characters. The director creates a nice atmosphere, while cutting up the events in an interesting way.7+.

Weird things goin’ around this world

October 7th, 2003

BBC reports:
“Scientists have developed a male contraceptive which was 100% effective and side-effect free in trials.”
This is a progestin based solution (a very female hormone) with injections needed every 3 or 4 months. This temporarily stops the brain from sending the normal signal to produce sperm.
The side-effect is a lowered sex-drive (and probably a higher pitched voice). This will be counter-acted by shots of testosterone.
As with most hormone treatments, when stopped, everything will return to normal after a few months (or so they say).
Is this totally out of control, or what ?
Can all the guys say it with me: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah !!!

Yupz, a second batch just came in, only 2 months overdue, “Magnolia” Special Edition, and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” Special Edition. That leaves only one lawsuit pending.

Top Weirdo’s

Like previous entries about weird science research, usually squandering our tax money, there’s actually a prize for it to be earned.
Take a look here for the igNobel winners of this year.
For instance, Biology went to a Dutchmen ” for documenting the first scientifically recorded case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard duck”. Can’t say I’m proud of that.

Weird things goin’ around the States

October 3rd, 2003
tv logo

Did you know it’s more likely you land a role on a cop show in the States than to win two hundred bucks in any random lottery ? The last five years, not only reality shows have sprouted like mushrooms on TV, but the cop/law enforcement kinda TV shows are right on par.

Here’s a list of oldies:

Law&Order (NBC)
NYPD Blue (ABC)
Cops (Fox)
JAG (CBS)

Here’s a list of new ones over the past 3 years, and they haven’t replaced the previous list, no, they have been added !

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS) – Jerry Bruckheimer’s shot at TV
CSI: Miami (CBS) – dito
Cold Case (CBS) – Focussing on old unsolved cases, also a Bruckheimer’s.
Without a Trace (CBS) – Does Bruckheimer ever stop to catch a breath ? Another one, focusing on missing persons
Robbery Homicide Division/LA (CBS) – standard cop show
The District (CBS) – Focusing on the chief of the Washington D.C. district
The Handler (CBS) – Joe Pantoliano plays an FBI agent who trains rookies
Hack (CBS) – Ex cop driving around in a cab, still fighting crime
NCIS (CBS) – This Navy Crime Investigative Service is a JAG spin-off, with a bit of copy-catting the style of CSI
Law&Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC)
Law&Order: Criminal Intent (NBC)
Third Watch (NBC) – Only half of this show is focused on the cops
Hunter (NBC) – revival of the old 80-ties series
Boomtown (NBC) – The same crime seen from all angles (cops, bad guys, etc)
Crossing Jordan (NBC) – Medical examiner works with the police
24 (Fox) – Jack Bauer, former special agent, head of CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit)
Fastlane (Fox) – Charlie’s Angels director McG’s view of a hip cop show with fast cars
Threat Matrix (ABC) – Another show featuring special agents focusing on terrorism
Alias (ABC) – Jennifer Garner plays an undercover double agent who works for the CIA
Karen Cisco (ABC) – She’s an US Marshall, based on the Out of Sight movie (which was then played by Jennifer Lopez)
Monk (ABC) – Tony Shalhoub plays a former police detective with some obsessive compulsive traits
Dragnet (ABC) – another 80-ties revival
10-8: Officers on Duty (ABC) – Nudding interesting here either.
Jake2.0 (UPN) – Young NSA tech dude turned agent
Peacemakers (USA) – Tom Berenger is a sheriff of a small town

And these are show that are currently on the air !!! In those three years a few got created and cancelled after one or two seasons (UC: Undercover, The Agency, Special Unit 2, Haunted, John Doe)

A long list, with only a handful worth watching (CSI’s strong writing, 24’s glued on chair storyline and Alias’ extended story arch). But I still suggest you watch them all, so you can see that most of them are so alike, it’s not fun anymore, even if it’s meant to lift the spirit of all those US citizens.

Review: Enterprise 303 304

Still a mixed bag, as there are still some senseless one story episodes, but then comes the next one, which is another well integrated show continuing the story arch. With more setbacks along the way, desperate moves are required, so the series still has a few breaths left if it continues this way, and a few seasons if it is able to improve what it’s doing now.

Nicolas Cage as a neurotic conman does another wonderful job in this cute movie. Being a character driven story, it moves along nicely, while getting a nice twist at the end. A delight between all the standard issue movies released lately.8-.

US Box Office

Another quiet movie weekend, covered by some lesser known movies (again?). First up is The Rundown (opens here 22 Jan), starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Probably visited by those curious to find out if he learned some acting skills yet. A surprising $18.5 million for this surprisingly well received movie. Second is Diane Lane’s headlining Under the Tuscan Sun, where probably mostly the ladies brought in a $9.4 million (opens here, I dunreally care). Last week’s number one, Underworld, had some 57% less blood to suck and ended up third with some $9.4 million.
At nr. 7 is Danny Devito’s helmed dark comedy Duplex starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore, somehow didn’t attract people and thus really bombed with justw $4.6 million (opens here, feb/mar).

Review: Disneyland Paris

September 29th, 2003
k logo

Having to cover some 500+ kilometers forced an early departure (5:30) to still be able to enjoy a bigger part of the day (arrival at around 13:00). Starting off at the Movies Studios, where there are about some 5 big attractions. Ranging from Live Actions show featuring some very live stunts, to a few rollercoaster rides to some mellow site seeing type of shows. Dual language is the keyword here, though the accent the French have, it’s hard to understand what they’re saying. About a third of this section is for food (mostly fast food) and merchandising. The second day was reserved for the bigger Disney Park itself. Divided in some five themed sections, this has even more site seeing styled shows, and only a few rollercoaster rides. Also more children friendly attractions are in abundance here. The dual language setup in the Movie Studios did not apply here though, more and more French was overtaking the attractions, and the sparse spoken English were spoken by people who tried to remember the words without knowing what it really means, so it becomes a bit garbled after so many repetitions. The fast food chains and merchandising ratio are even higher in this region, and a rough calculation shows the total queues equals some 40 mid-sized McDonald’s at work. With the prizes some ranging from 10 to 30 percent above the normal prizes, it’s a mystery why Disney is still making a loss at this resort (did I mention 12 euros for a rollercoaster snapshot picture ?).
Just a walking distance outside the park is the Disney Village, where even more food and merchandising is at work, freely accessible for public. Also situated is a train station (probably where the Thalys makes a stop), and a big movie theatre, showing mostly Disney (and Touchstone Pictures) related movies.
2 halve days are a little bit short, and 2 or 3 full days is recommended for full enjoyment of the whole park.
Hotels are also flooding the area surrounding the park. Most are just within minutes away with the free busses commuting every 10 minutes or so. Most hotels are HUGE, and quite luxurious, though still keeping it simple, nice and clean.
All in all, for not too much money, you can have quite a nice vacation if you plan it right.

Time for some pictures, take a look here.

Well, 4 hours of sleep, and then I’m off to Paris, Disneyland. Hiking along for a free weekend with my bro’s Getronics personnel thingy. Who says Getronics isn’t doing well ?
CNN Weather Report says it’ll be cloudy. So till Monday, I’ll be hugging Donald, Mickey and other big persons in big fluffy suits.

To Split or not to Split

September 24th, 2003

Still, reports of the split between Affleck and Big Azz Lopez keep contradicting. Even CNN can’t figure it out yet. See this link.
Hypothetically, IF they were split, and you were ms. Lopez, what would bug you more ? A big tattoo with Ben Affleck’s name on yer big azz, or the videoclip featuring Ben Affleck made for the “I’m Glad” song. Remember, one can be erased, one cannot.

Underworld, a Kate Beckinsale starring vampire-werewolf movie, drew the blood of other contestants, and ended up nr. 1 with $22 million (opens here 15 Jan). Second place was for MTV musical styled The Fighting Temptations (opens here, uhm, don’t care) with $13.2 million. 3rd place was for Haley Joel Osments return to the silver screen, co-starring Michael Cain and Robert Duvall in Secondhand Lions with $12.9 million (opens here 13 Nov). Once Upon a Time in Mexico takes another $11.5 million in its second week. Last, a not so scary horror flick starring a not so scary house, Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone, is Cold Creek Manor with a not so scary $8.3 million.
