Yupz, had to buy a new pair of gloves again, because it’s getting really cold. The problem is that I lose the right hand one every year. So even if I buy the same color every year, it won’t help. After so many years, you’d hope the left-glove-curse would be over, but I guess only time will tell.

Review: Boomtown 201

With a lot of starpower (Rebecca DeMornay, Vanessa Williams, Kelly Hu) guesting on the season opener, you certainly don’t get a lot of content. All the characters are empty, including the show’s regulars. The story is too simplistic and the dialogue is stiff. If they try this all season long, they’ll probably end up in NBC’s trash bin.

Review: Mystic River

October 23rd, 2003
movie logo

Critically acclaimed by some 90% of the big name reviewers, yet I left the movie theatre with some mixed feelings. Clint Eastwood obviously pushed the actors to give him the best performances possible, but with the story and the drama going on, it still feels like something vital is missing. The movies also feels too long (and probably is, clocking in over 2 hours), and even the end seems to be made to put us off balance. The first half is a well executed exploratory piece of drama, while the second seems somewhat predictable. Eastwood is able to get the atmosphere continuously on a level where you keep your eyebrows raised worryingly throughout the movie though. Also, Sean Penn is on an Oscar performance level here. It’s difficult to catagorise this movie, but it’s definitely not standard Hollywood, so if you’re into that, by all means, go see it.7.

Switching

October 23rd, 2003

As you’ve noticed, old TV shows turn up on the silver screen, but have you noticed a lot of movie producers and directors turn to TV ?
Jerry Bruckheimer of course, made the most notable jump, with some NINE (!!!!) TV shows running CONCURRENTLY this season, while keeping busy being successful in the movie bizz.
The rest:
Martin Campbell (The Mask of Zorro, Vertical Limit) is doing 10-8: Officers on Duty (yeah, though the earlier cop TV shows list was long, I didn’t include all of’m).
Danny DeVito combines his powers with Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black I & II) on Karen Sisco.
Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, and the upcoming Ocean’s Twelve) does K Street.
Russel Mulcahy (Highlander I & II) does Bruckheimer newest, Skin.
Mark Pellington (The Mothman Prophecies, Arlington Road) also helps Bruckheimer a hand on Cold Case.
Phillip Noyce (Sliver, The Saint, Clear and Present Danger) is developing the series premiere of Tru Calling, starring Eliza Dushku.

And of course, I didn’t catch them all, there are some more to be found. Can you ?

Look out for some more old TV series going silver. Next year, Starsky & Hutch will turn comedy, starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. But after that, The Six Million Dollar Man, will be changed to a rapid fire laugh machine too. Jim Carrey just signed the starring and developing/producing role on this project. Expect it in 2005.

Yupz, the Dutch team (most notably from the University of Delft) won this year’s World Solar Challenge in Australia. The vehicle named Nuna II finished the 3010 km race in under 31 hours. That means it’s also a world record. Average speed is about 97 km/h (almost my running speed).
So, can y’all say it with me ? “WE BEAT EM AI TEE !!!” (MIT finished third)

David Blaine made it through the 44 days without food, dangling above the Thames. Lost a few pounds, gained a few (UK) pounds, as he delivered Sky One’s most solid ratings ever. No McDonald’s or something like that anytime soon though, as solid food would kill him after such a long time of fasting.

US Box Office

October 20th, 2003

With no big names attached to it, and only a remake stamp on it, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (opens here 22 Jan) slashed a $29.1 million slice of the box office. In its second week, Kill Bill Volume 1 managed to get some too, $12.5 million, almost down 50% from last week. Runaway Jury (opens here 11 Mar) has enough big names to take the top spot, but strangely lands a nr 3 spot with only $12.1 million. School of Rock finishes fourth with an admirable $11.3 million. Critically acclaimed Mystic River (opens here 23 Oct), helmed by Clint Eastwood, finishes the top 5 with $10.3 million, showing promise, as it opened in far less theatres than the others.

Still sailing…

Well, there are still pirates in the Carribean, as the director put the stamp on the sequel, with Johnny, Orlando and Keira already signed to star. With a $300 million domestic US Box Office, I can only imagine mr. Disney’s and Bruckheimer’s smiles that would make the Joker jealous.

review: Enterprise 305 – 306

October 18th, 2003
tv logo

After a few consistently written episodes, the signs of tiredness are already showing. Episode 305 showed us a writer’s block larger than the whole Milky Way galaxy, and while the episode after that tried some character exploration, it was too predictable. Hopes are down, only 75% more of a season to go.

Stupid things going around this world…

October 18th, 2003
k logo

BBC reports, Aaron Caffrey, aged 19, has been cleared of trying to bring one of the US’s biggest ports to a standstill by hacking into its computer systems.
The reason ? A stupid jury. It happens more and more, hackers convincing the jury that it was actually their own computer that was hacked, and then later used to control other thousands of hacked machines. Not only was there no evidence supporting this theory, the kid in question actually admitted he was a hacker himself. A hacker wouldn’t be stupid enough to let someone else try those tricks on his own system, but with so many cases already thrown out, it’s a proven method to evade jail time.
I’d better practice a sad face, and maybe a tear here and there, as that’s more worth to a jury than the actual evidence, which are just zeros and ones they don’t understand.

Review: My Life Without Me

October 17th, 2003
movie logo

Almost a typical independent movie which radiates intimacy and depth of character. The way the story is told (with good actors all around) and how it moves towards the end makes this a nice little cute movie with the power to tear a jerk (or the other way around), but also pulls off a smile here and there. Must see if you’re trying to break free from the box office styled movies.7+.
