Top Weirdo’s

Like previous entries about weird science research, usually squandering our tax money, there’s actually a prize for it to be earned.
Take a look here for the igNobel winners of this year.
For instance, Biology went to a Dutchmen ” for documenting the first scientifically recorded case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard duck”. Can’t say I’m proud of that.

Review: Disneyland Paris

Monday, September 29th, 2003

Having to cover some 500+ kilometers forced an early departure (5:30) to still be able to enjoy a bigger part of the day (arrival at around 13:00). Starting off at the Movies Studios, where there are about some 5 big attractions. Ranging from Live Actions show featuring some very live stunts, to a few rollercoaster rides to some mellow site seeing type of shows. Dual language is the keyword here, though the accent the French have, it’s hard to understand what they’re saying. About a third of this section is for food (mostly fast food) and merchandising. The second day was reserved for the bigger Disney Park itself. Divided in some five themed sections, this has even more site seeing styled shows, and only a few rollercoaster rides. Also more children friendly attractions are in abundance here. The dual language setup in the Movie Studios did not apply here though, more and more French was overtaking the attractions, and the sparse spoken English were spoken by people who tried to remember the words without knowing what it really means, so it becomes a bit garbled after so many repetitions. The fast food chains and merchandising ratio are even higher in this region, and a rough calculation shows the total queues equals some 40 mid-sized McDonald’s at work. With the prizes some ranging from 10 to 30 percent above the normal prizes, it’s a mystery why Disney is still making a loss at this resort (did I mention 12 euros for a rollercoaster snapshot picture ?).
Just a walking distance outside the park is the Disney Village, where even more food and merchandising is at work, freely accessible for public. Also situated is a train station (probably where the Thalys makes a stop), and a big movie theatre, showing mostly Disney (and Touchstone Pictures) related movies.
2 halve days are a little bit short, and 2 or 3 full days is recommended for full enjoyment of the whole park.
Hotels are also flooding the area surrounding the park. Most are just within minutes away with the free busses commuting every 10 minutes or so. Most hotels are HUGE, and quite luxurious, though still keeping it simple, nice and clean.
All in all, for not too much money, you can have quite a nice vacation if you plan it right.

Time for some pictures, take a look here.

Disneyland

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

Well, 4 hours of sleep, and then I’m off to Paris, Disneyland. Hiking along for a free weekend with my bro’s Getronics personnel thingy. Who says Getronics isn’t doing well ?
CNN Weather Report says it’ll be cloudy. So till Monday, I’ll be hugging Donald, Mickey and other big persons in big fluffy suits.

To Split or not to Split

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

Still, reports of the split between Affleck and Big Azz Lopez keep contradicting. Even CNN can’t figure it out yet. See this link.
Hypothetically, IF they were split, and you were ms. Lopez, what would bug you more ? A big tattoo with Ben Affleck’s name on yer big azz, or the videoclip featuring Ben Affleck made for the “I’m Glad” song. Remember, one can be erased, one cannot.

Stupid things goin’ around this world

Saturday, September 20th, 2003

Stiff upperlips ? Not quite. In the UK, there’s actually a term called “binge drinking” which officially means, any drinking session which involves the consumption of at least eight units of alcohol, if you are a man, or six, if you are a woman.
A new report shows the combined costs of alcohol-related crime and disorder, health problems, lost productivity and domestic break-up have been estimated as approaching £20 billion a year. There are an estimated 1.2 million incidents of alcohol-related violence, and 85,000 incidents of drink-driving a year. Drink accounts for one in 26 NHS “bed-days”, and up to 17 million working days are lost annually through alcohol abuse.
Other reports say this estimate is conservative, to say the least.
Well, have another beer, it’s on me.

Cordially uninvited

Wednesday, September 17th, 2003

While it’s definitely sure the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez wedding is off, there’s still the conflict off their alleged break-up. News divisions are equally divided over standard R&R, finishing up a movie, to reports of Ben getting cuddly with other brunette females. In any case, it’s understandable. Let’s be honest, would you wanna marry a woman who insured her big set of ass or her big set of brains ?

Happy Birthday

Monday, September 8th, 2003

Yesterday, Google had its 5th anniversary. From a garage with roughly 10.000 hits a day, to a growing enterprise with 200 million queries a day. Quite a feat, you might say, but my analysis is somewhat simpler:
Speed and accuracy – in a time where all the big search engines took tens of seconds to return some shaky results, Google was fast and reliable.
Marketing – A very useful toolbar came standard with the earliest version of Opera. A toolbar for Internet Explorer was easy to download and use as well. Big sites (like CNN) feature a “powered by Google” search button.
And last but not least, the name – “Can you altavista this and that for me ?” doesn’t sound quite as catchy, does it ?

(also, use the statistics link above this article to see google is really the best)

Weird things goin’ around…

Ever wished smug-faced illusionist David Blaine dead ? Now couldn’t be a better time, as he is about to step in to a small plastic box to be hanged above the London Thames for 44 days. Having a contract with UK’s TV channels Sky One and Channel 4, he’ll try to do absolutely nothing (you can’t move in the small box) in those 6 weeks, except to drink from some trickling doped up water stream, and some urinating through a tube. What a dynamic show that will be ! His chance for survival aren’t that slim though, as there are records of people who’ve survived worse.
Also, the Guinness Book of Records will not allow any of Blaine’s crazy stunts (3 days in a block of ice and being buried alive) for obvious reasons. Guess just the money will do then.
10 million Euros would do for me. How much would you ask for those 44 days ?

Expensive thing going around this world…

Thursday, August 28th, 2003

As everybody knows by now, Ah-nuhld Schwarzenegger is running for governor of California. But even with his major star status, it doesn’t come cheaply. His campaign has been budgetted at a freakin’ $20 million. Of which he will use $5 million of his own pocket, the rest he will try to raise through other means (mostly fishing for donations from wealthy people). So, what would _you_ do with 20 million bucks. Run for governor or buy a house so you can quietly live the rest of your life ?

Presents

Sunday, August 24th, 2003

Well, it’s a bit late, but I got the first load of birthday presents today. Only after I threatened with a lawsuit that is. 2 DVD’s, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Director’s Edition, and Star Trek: Nemesis. I expect another load of DVD’s in a few weeks.

Crazy stuff going around…

Sunday, August 24th, 2003

Excerpt from BBC News:
“Virus hits hospital systems – Staff at a Glasgow hospital worked round the clock to restore its computer systems after the network was struck by the Nachi worm….-….He praised all the staff who worked to get the problem fixed. “Our IT department were on it from about 1600 and worked right through the night to get essential systems back by 0730,” he said.”

Hahahhahaaa. The IT department had to work so hard because they DIDN’T DO their job in the first place (otherwise, the worm wouldn’t have gotten in, let alone wreck havoc). They should fix it even if they have to work 48 hours non-stop UNPAID, and then they should be fired. What would you do ?

Biggest baddest worm …

Friday, August 22nd, 2003

Well, all the headlines are clear on one thing. The new Sobig.F worm/virus is the biggest baddest fast spreading one up until now.
The conclusion of every article however, is quite wrong. They keep saying how the code has been perfected since the Sobig.E variant. The true reason for the record spreading wave is that, while global warming increases the temperature, somehow the global average IQ is very much going down !
From France to Tokyo, it doesn’t matter what the native language is, the fall for the “re: Application” subject lines, or even the English slanged “Wicked screensaver!” fires a curiosity neuron in the brain. A mindless click on the attachment is inevitable.
My educated guess is that the global average IQ is down 20 points since Sobig.E. How much do you think ?

Scared ?

Sunday, August 17th, 2003

Well, the dang MSBlaster worm wuz a stupid worm for sure. It attacked www.windowsupdate.com, which wasn’t ever used anywayz (it has always been (v4.)windowsupdate.microsoft.com). It did lead to a few strange jumps for microsoft though. Jumping from platform and hosting firm a few times the past few days. From the *.microsoft.com site went from Windows 2003 Server to Linux (strangely, still operating IIS6) hosted by long time ally Akamai Technologies. The last jump is only a few hours later, to the fiber rich above.net, also a Linux favorer.
A quick look shows they’re having a pool of at least 16 IP addresses, with probably even more bandwidth and machines hanging behind each IP, which means next worm must work a lot faster and smarter if it wants to make even a small dent {:)
