Review: Pink – Try This

Saturday, November 22nd, 2003

People who like her previous materials should watch out with this one. While Missundaztood was a mixed bag, this one is a bag better left alone. The few gems on the previous album were easily picked, but on this one, you won’t find any at all. Going the directions she’s taken already with the Charlie’s Angels 2 soundtrack, and like the first single from this album, the album is filled with even harder kinda rock. No subtlety is to be found, and even if the lyrics might be good, you’d be put off before you ever get to really hear it. It’s like those new dull “dance” songs from Madonna and Kylie Minogue, but then in the rock area. A twitch on the forward button…

Review: Lene Marlin – Another Day

Sunday, October 26th, 2003

Unmistakenly the same team behind her previous albums, the recognizable fast pace – short pace verses sung with a whispery voice is still on every song, but somehow, it seems she has grown up and gone a little bit more boring this time around. With only 10 songs to be found, only less than half of it has a nice sing-a-long rhythm. The others have a slow despressing mood hovering it. Definitely not worth your money.

Review: Amy Studt – False Smiles

Sunday, October 26th, 2003

I’m sure Amy wouldn’t like it, but the comparison had to be made – using Misfit as her debut single, someone had to say it. Avril Lavigne. But listening the whole album, you’ll have to adjust the comparison. It’s more like a church-going Avril, both content and style. A bit more poppy, a bit less rocky. A few ballad like songs mixed inbetween, and you have yourself an album that’s not too catchy, but it’s not too boring either. A good build-up with nice vocals is to be heard in Going out of my Mind, and it would be nice if the whole album had this quality. Instead you get a whiny depressing Happy Now and a few more choir background styled songs. Vocally, this album isn’t that challening either, keeping all the tones somewhere in the middle. As a whole album, this reflects, it’s mediocre.

Review: Dido – Life for Rent

Tuesday, October 14th, 2003

Starting the album with White Flag was a smart choice, as it’s the only positive thing to say. While the Dido signature (slow high fades to slow low fade) drips from most songs, there are even a few unexpected, yet unexciting turns. An uptempo dance beat song called Stoned, a folklore inspired Don’t Leave Home, keeps you interested, but only for a few minutes. In the end, this whole experience will be forgotten in just a few days.

Review: Jessica Simpson – In This Skin

Saturday, August 23rd, 2003

Starting the album with opener song “In This Skin”, the first impression is a slick well produced pop song. Then the first negative feeling creeps in, the vocals start off very nasal. A few minutes in, and you get the feeling it’s very much over-produced, your auditory senses overloaded with numerous sounds spit out from an expensive synthesizer. A few numbers ahead, and you’re faced with a few slow ballads, but the moans throughout the song won’t keep you from almost dozing off. With nothing to set her apart from any other artist, this pop certainly has no impact. The longevity for this album will be very short, apart from 1 or 2 songs.6-.

Hit Predict…

Wednesday, August 20th, 2003

Nickelback has a new single out, Someday. And it’s as generic a guitar riff can get, with the usual untalented yelling. Nothing really new, yet it will still be a mild hit. Why ? The female part of the population will dig his new hairdo !
What do you think it’ll be?

Poll…

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Time for a poll…
First download this 79 KB mp3. Listen to it, and then judge.
First is Lumidee – Never Leave You (Uh Ooh Uh Ooh) followed by Sean Paul – Get Busy and it ends with Wayne Wonder – No Letting Go.

What these so-called summer hits (and good lord, they are topping the charts indeed, have mercy on my soul, as there’s probably nothing on earth that irritates me more) have in common is:
a. Monotonous irritating vocals.
b. Irritating BEAT.
c. Even MORE irritating hand claps.
d. ALL THREE SONGS SHARE THE EXACT SAME BEAT TRACK !

So please vote, which of the three is the most irritating.

Review: Delta Goodrem – Innocent Eyes

Sunday, July 13th, 2003

Like many Aussie singers spinning of the soap series Neighbours, she’s the most current one. And a mighty good one at that. The first impression of this mostly poppy tunes album are clear from the word go. Her voice is soft yet clear and powerful, with the occasional lashes to the higher notes. Added to that good vibrato for the more ballad like songs makes her voice more dynamic, then, dare I say, Natalie Imbruglia ? The songs are all kinda poppy but enough variaties keep the whole album swinging.8.

While she’s currently battling the Hodgkins disease (a form of lymphatic cancer), she probably has no time to promote her album. So here’s another song to download (5.7 MB). If you like it, really, just buy it.

Review: Michelle Branch – Hotel Paper

Sunday, July 13th, 2003

Having only heard a couple of the hits she’s made the past two years, listening to a whole album isn’t quite an eye-opener. Filled with the kind of songs you’d expect from her, it has a really laid-back rock kinda feeling. There are a few catchy tunes, and there are some I can’t get used to (which probably end up in the recycle bin). For a picky person like me, I’d stamp an average rating on this album, but many previous fans of her albums will probably like it very much.7-.
